Looking at NewsRiver problems Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Some time ago, I imported a large OPML subscription file into NewsRiver (over 300 feeds). I started whittling them down, and now I have 42 subscriptions when I look at the "NewsRiver: Subscriptions" page.

I noticed, though, that I seem to be getting stories from weblogs other than the ones I have subscribed to. In the About OPML window, I see that it reaches 192 threads. This does not seem to make sense. After some looking around, I found that aggregatorData.root.services is a table with 194 items, which look like feed URLs. I wonder if this is the list that is being scanned. If it is, why does it not match the subscription list that I see in the browser?

Notes on using NewsRiver Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I am still checking out the different features in the OPML Editor, but I have noticed some problems in unsubscribing from feeds. A few weeks ago, I imported Jon Udell's Bloglines OPML file. I then tried to delete all the feeds I was not interested in, but a large number of them kept showing up.

I don't know if the problem was that a scan had started while I was trying to unsubscribe, or if there was some other problem. Today, I started a scan, waited until it was done, then deleted the rest of the feeds I did not want. I will see if it takes full effect this time.

Editing my blogroll Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I am trying to update my blogroll tonight. My first attempts after reading the basic weblog page were unsuccessful (I do not have a two button mouse on my Mac).

After some searching, I found a page on outliners.com which talked about editing a blogroll. I saw a note there that Mac users should use Control-Click instead of right-click. I then entered a headline in my blogroll outline which had the title of a web site, then held the Control key down and clicked on the triangle at the beginning of the headline. Surprise - I saw a contextual menu pop-up, and I was able to select "Add Link"! Woohoo!

After that success, I found an entry on right-click menus which said the same thing. However, I think this needs to be fleshed out a little more somewhere in the documentation for Mac users.

Testing importing reading lists in NewsRiver Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I went to Jon Udell's old InfoWorld weblog, and found the link to his Bloglines subscription list. I decided to go ahead and download the list. Next, I did NewsRiver | Import OPML, selected the file I just downloaded, and got a message that there were 393 sources (!) and asking me if I wanted to do a scan now. Went ahead and did the scan, it is still in progress.

This is a test of the single item entry. This should have some type of permalink at the end of this sentence. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Trying out WordPress.root Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I downloaded several of the OPML Editor tools today, including WordPress.root. I set up a test WordPress weblog on my computer and gave it a try. The result - I like it! I made several posts, they all appear in a single outline. I plan to do some more testing of this tool, especially to see what happens when I delete items from the outline.

Exploring the Instant Outliner Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I checked my www folder, and saw that there was an Instant Outliner folder, and it appeared that I had an OPML outline there. Was able to open the outline using the Open URL command at http://hosting.opml.org/sylvester/instantOutliner/andySylvester.opml

Was also able to open Instant Outlines for Les Orchard and Dave Winer. I did not make any edits in them, I think I will work on editing mine for now.

Adding a post from another weblog Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I decided to re-posting a post from Les Orchard's weblog after reading it in NewsRiver, here it is.

Heh - peak listeners on the TwitterGramCast is 2. The hack actually works, but there need to be more TwitterGrams flowing for it to be worth a full-time stream. But, if or when that happens... the technology will be ready. :) [l.m.orchard's OPML blog]

When I clicked on "POST" on the NewsRiver web page, the text of the post appeared in my daily outline as a headline at the top of the file. I then moved it to below the initial paragraph in this post, and saw the text as a paragraph below that one. I then indented the entry another level using the Tab key, and now the entry is indented like a blockquote, which is what I would like to see when I quote another weblog. Excellent!

Exploring Instant Outlining Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I am going to try to create an instant outline.

Went to Community | Instant Outliner, created a test outline and saved it.

Now I need to find out where it is.

Quirk in displaying multiple days on the home page Permanent link to this item in the archive.

After I saved my entry for today, all I saw on the home page was this entry. I checked my preferences, and it was still set to 7 days. I resubmitted it, then reloaded, and was able to see all of the entries.
