Duke Podcasting Symposium, Day 1
Getting under way.
A few links:
No cell reception in the hall, so it may not be totally possible to do a Classcaster post, but I may rev up SIP and see what sort of trouble I can cause:)
As of 10:00, audio portion of webcast is not working. Ironic isn't it? Problem seems to be that there is some interference between the various wireless mics.
The number 15,000 keeps getting kicked around as the total number of available podcasts. I think this is coming from the number of podcasts available on iTunes, which is not a real good counter. My sense if that there are more podcasts, but Apple don't know about them.
| | Question: if you don't list your cast on iTunes does it really exist? |
First panel: Business & Monetization Panel Discussion
The focus of this panel is seriously 'new media' though it really seems like radio goes podcasting.
Tim Bourquin, TNC New Media, EnduranceRadio.com, Podcast &Portable Media Expo
| | Making money at podcasting. |
| | most of audience is not blogging or podcasting |
| | applying exisiting models to monetizing podcasts |
| | advertising: a lot like radio, but not so much time |
| | subscription: monthly fee, like email newsletters; donations |
| | free plus premium: added content paid for per d/l |
| | marketing: use podcasts to market product or service |
| | direct sales: infomercials |
| | EnduranceRadio.com uses podcasting to each a niche audience, very targeted. Causes producers to have to be creative about getting advertising. CPM doesn't work for a lot of podcasting becuase of narrow audience. |
| | Create networks that reach across similar demographics, not topics. |
| | if lots of triatheletes are also lawyers, team endurance up with law sites. |
John Federico, Director of Business Development & General Manager of Podcasting Business Unit, Audible.com
| | Audible was in most ways the first to market with a lot of digital audio stuff |
| | 75,000+ hours of digital audio |
| | Will release Audible-ready podcasting platform 4Q 05 |
| | DRM - secure business audio, course work, etc. |
| | Podcasting poses some challenges to business |
| | podcasting can be ad supported and premium/fee supported |
| | Use real data, you can see who is listening |
Michael Geoghegan, Reel Reviews Radio, Grape Radio
| | podcasting as a business: Grape Radio |
| | setup from the get go as a business. |
| | spending $850 a month to create podcast |
| | initial investment of $25,000 |
| | revenue of about $4,000 per month |
| | not getting rich, but nice side income |
| | if you are going to monetize, treat it as a media company, position for acquisition |
Doug Kaye, IT Conversations
| | exclusive licenses for the conference audio |
| | doing stuff all over the world |
| | podcasting changes people lives |
| | passion is key, people get into what you are doing |
| | putting event online expands audience and expands conversation increases value |
| | note to self: we really need to strip audio from conference archive and render it into MP3 |
| | any sort of tollgating/registration decreases value in global conversation |
Q&A
| | not really, podcasting is about narrow markets, so things like iTunes ranking is not relevant to most podcasters. Major media outlets are using podcasting as just another way to reach their audience, but not necessarily grow audience. |
| | How is content licensing handled? |
| | IT Conversations use a Creative Commons sampling license. |
| | EnduranceRadio uses standard copyright, reserving all rights. |
| | Will podcasting kill advertising by eliminating distance between advertiser and consumer? |
| | no, because ads are ads and content is content. Keep in mind that content should have a value add whereas ads are overt marketing. |
| | Advertising changes as format of media changes. |
| | Will things we have seen in the blogosphere apply in podcasting, such as ad networks for podcasting or podcasting networks? |
| | podcasting will grow faster since it is piggy-backing on blogs |
| | targeting ads is being looked at. |
Second panel: Performance & Identity Panel Discussion
Let's put on a show kids! Now we get down to the academics, so this oughta be exciting.
Philip Auslander, School of Literature, Communication, and Culture, Georgia Institute of Technology
| | a dramatic reading from 'Death of a Salesman' |
| | Howard and Willy fiddle with a wire recorder, talk about time shifting |
| | podcasting as time shifting |
| | this is true especially of repurposed audio from traditional outlets |
| | for pure podcasts, there is no real temporal anchor, so they are not tied to a specific time. this makes them more like sound recordings than broadcasts |
| | what we listen to helps shape our cultural identity. |
| | podcasting takes place in the heart of the digital divide |
| | now we know it's a real academic conference! |
danah boyd, School of Information Management & Systems, University of California - Berkeley
| | Creating community online |
| | getting like minds onto the same space at the same time |
| | many small communities, niche communities, one-to-few |
| | ephemeral, evolving community consumption |
| | how does remix become mass consumption? |
Daniel Foster, Department of Theater Studies, Duke University
| | podcasting as 1930's radio. |
| | podcasting allows the voicing of thoughts and opinions of anyone and everyone... |
| | don't over-generalize podcasting |
| | popularity is in identity as everyday person |
| | similarities between radio and podcast will wear thin over time as differences in media grow |
Mimi Ito, Annenberg Center for Communication, University of Southern California
| | amatuer cultural production, especially involving teens |
| | internet collapses notions of production and consumption |
| | the change is in the culutural products that dominate |
| | the mid-scale networks, not just friends and family, and not the world, are on the rise. |
| | think schools, business, town meetings |
| | a lot of amatuer content is here |
| | Q: how does Classcaster, and CALI for that matter fit into something like this? It is a mid-scale network, but on the larger side. |
Q&A
| | What are the implications for new identity? for new sociality? is this a new technology or an outgrowth of existing technology? is this a mass medium? |
| | Most people don't care about everyone, only those who share somethings in common that bring people together. People create clusters around identity, values, and culture. Blogging is actually collapsing culture |
| | some stuff is the same, but how it is organizing is new. Internet affects how this stuff is putting itself together. |
