Ahhh..., life is good, I can Talk to OPML Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Did I mention that I don't have to type? I can use Dragon Naturally Speaking on my Windows Version OPML, and just speak whatever is on my mind. Uh-oh! Doh! Hmmm, I wonder if OPML can do...., Ooops, Ummmm.....

 LOL!

 Testing the update to changes.opml

Okay, there it is, it didn't happen earlier when I posted. Hmmmm... It's possible that the corporate network had something to do with that. Now that I am back at home, it's working. Network traffic is always a factor, and also the time that the server backups start is a factor.

This is my reply to some discussion going on over at the OPML Mailing List

I have posted it here for posterity.

Michael,

Okay, everybody, I am not sure about posting this, but since there is a sort of conversation going on, I am going to put it here. I am also going to post this on my OPML Blog so that it can be recorded.

Well said. I have been OCCD'd (A NinjaCoder) since I was about 15 or so and wrote my first cobol program. Let's see, way back in, well… let's just say that Spiderman Comic Books, Mad Magazine, and Surfer mag were some my favorite mags to read. I have been "organizing" ever since. However, my spirit longs to have a free and open platform. Where my code can roam, and learn, and adapt.

Learning how to code in 'C', in 1985, was eye opening, as it reflected to me the power one could have with such a tool.

The design goal that you describe here:

"The design goal is to have a transparently simple, self-documenting,

extensible and human readable format that's capable of representing a

wide variety of data that's easily browsed and edited."

Is the equivalent of the IT Holy Grail of many who work in teams and need to collaborate.

The closest thing I have seen, and that doesn't mean that there are other answers to this problem, is The Web, and it's various Open Source Content Management Systems.

Edit this Page functionality created a whole new realm of possibilities, and opened up many more vistas.

I work in a Corporate Environment. The closest that I have come to your design goal is MS SharePoint Portal server. We have provided training to Business Users as Portal Admins, and the concept has taken off. They can design their pages (within certain limits), add content, even collaborate, with Out of the Box functionality. They are in control, and 'they' like it that way. It certainly makes my job a lot easier!!!

Ever since I started developing applications in the 80's, I have believed in giving as much power, and choice to the users as possible. I was a total maverick in those days, and many of my managers said, "You can't do that!", and I proved them wrong in every case. I wasn't very popular. Needless to say, I was responsible for multi-million dollar budgets based on behemoth hardware being cancelled in favor of my puny PC/LAN solutions. Heheh… The good news and the bad news was, the user's loved it and wanted more, and were willing to pay for it.

So, I have discovered Mr. Winer and all that he has to offer, and I am quite happy to be part of what he is creating. If nothing else, it feels clean and free and empowering to be a 'user' and a 'contributor' all at the same time.

Regards,

David W

I am testing Dragon Naturally Speaking Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I have dictated this blog entry using Dragon NaturallySpeaking as a test to see if I could use my speaking tools rather than typing.

So know I know that Dragon NaturallySpeaking works with the OPML editor tool!

This is so cool!!!
