What is OPML for? It's up to US!!! One of the topics from the OPML RoadShow in Berkeley was sparked by a question that I am sure has been on all our minds, and has been asked before. Dave Winer responded with this. (These are MY OWN words and My OWN understanding of what he said...): Well, I suspected this, and Dave confirmed it for me at the OPML RoadShow when he said that the OPML Editor is a server as well as a client. Given the architecture of Frontier, I am not surprised by this. However, my ears pricked up on this one. Now, before you go loading this up to your server to see what happens, just know that this is most likely not the only piece and there are probably some configurations, and additional pieces, and adjustments to be made before it can be turned on as a server. You have been forwarned, just in case you get crazy and upload the software and crash your ISP's server. Heheh... OPML Decisions Made, Communication Necessary I have made some decisions about my involvement with OPML. I have decided to support Dave Winer in any way that I can. I will obviously have to hold some conversations with him, most likely via email, to find out where I can provide the most help at this time. Currently, I am a computer consultant, self-employed under my own Corporation, and I have been contracting direct with my current client for over 5 years. I have filled many roles (dba, project management, web developer, system architect, etc.) in the past few years, and I have a rich background with 30+ years in IT. So, there are many ways that I can provide help. We will see how this shakes out. I also have to get a couple of projects out of the way, to really kick into gear on OPML. Coming out of Hibernation, Rails Hickup I was doing some learning tonight on Rails on Ruby. I got stuck when I tried to build my scaffolding. A few weeks ago, I upgraded MySql to 4.1 and this broke Ruby a little bit. After searching the web, I found the fix. Took me about an hour or so though to locate it and apply it. Sometimes, developers are somewhat cryptic in their descriptions of patches and how to apply them. I took a WAG and succeeded. Whoohoo!!! |
