PHP Dreams, Rails Next, Database Design and MS Live Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I am dreaming/coding in PHP during the night, and developing in .NET during the day. What a crazy combination. I think that PHP nights are better than .NET days. I am waiting for MS to distribute their SQL database engine and VS .NET development environment for free. Heh, when hell freezes over...

My next project will be developed using Ruby on Rails, and boy, am I looking forward to giving it a try.

It's not too late yet tonight, for a programmer anyway, or a podcaster. 2am is when I do my best programming. I am currently developing an online back-end database using the LAMP platform and all is going well. I have just designed myself into a corner. Haven't done that in awhile, but I got too creative with the database and the lookup tables, and I have created a circular relationship between several tables. Arrrgggghhh... Need to step out of the theoretical and back into the practical realm of design. Use what works, modify what doesn't, and forget the rest.

I had a look at Microsoft Live today over at www.live.com. I wondered how they got that URL name. I understand it belonged to someone else a few months ago. Wish I had parked that domain name! Heh... Anyway, I was impressed that you could completely modify the interface, by dragging whole web sections (gadgets) around the screen to change the look and feel and the arrangement of the data ( I bet some folks missed that capability ). Reminds me of developing web apps in SharePoint. I tried a few feeds, and sometimes they worked, and sometimes they failed. Such is the Beta development mode. Scoble gave us a few hints later in the day, when he said that it would be tied to an advertising model, and that developers could get cash for developing modules to plug-in and when the module gets clicked, the developer gets paid. Interesting approach. We will have to see how this plays out. I also noticed that you could import an OPML file, which I didn't try at the time, as I was on a corporate desktop, without access to my OPML files at the time. I was able to hook-in my hotmail account, and it worked well, I will try the messenger and other plug-ins (they are called gadgets) tomorrow when I have a little time. Click here to access the object that's linked to this item.
