Microsoft - Give VS .NET 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Away for Free Permanent link to this item in the archive.

This is my proposal for Microsoft to give their flagship development environment away for free. I say to Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer and Ray Ozzie, hold a meeting, make a decision, and give it away for FREE. If you want to really shake up the development arena give your VS .NET and SQL Server 2005 software away for free. I guarantee you, you will see a disruptive revolution like you can't believe. Developers everywhere will flock to your servers and download your code and build awesome systems on your platforms, just like they do on LAMP right now. Go ahead, make us a deal we can't refuse!

FolderShare - Recently Acquired by Microsoft - Runs on Linux Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Phil Wainright over at ZDNet has revealed that FolderShare runs on the LAMP platform. FolderShare was recently acquired by Microsoft to bolster the new online services launch of Microsoft Live. I guess Microsoft gets it.

To Sam Ramji of the Microsoft Emerging Business Team Permanent link to this item in the archive.

This post is in regards to Sam's recent post titled "SaaS Startup Offering" regarding a proposal to lower the barrier to entry for startups. I like that you are trying to do something to respond to this bleak situation. Compared to .NET, it costs almost nothing for me to develop on the LAMP platform. I can get a powerful DELL-based Linux, VPS server with all the development tools and goodies that I need for $50/month. Until you get the cost of setting up a development environment under $100, you will not see enough traction to make a difference for MS business. I am working on a Sharepoint/Infopath/.NET implementation. I wish I could use my WAMP (Windows, Apache, MySql, PHP) FREE environment (or Ruby on Rails) to develop this on. Click here to access the object that's linked to this item.

As it is now, under the MS umbrella of software development offerings, I am going to need to shell out at least $2000, maybe more to get it going, and I am already a MS Partner Member!

I am not happy about this. I think that MS needs to find a way to subsidize the developers and set them free.

Keep going and keep trying.
