Massachusetts has been considering demanding open formats from Microsoft, and they've been having hearings about it. John Palfrey talked about RSS and OPML when he addressed the committee.  Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Steve Gillmor: "Take one of my favorite parts of Word- Outline mode. Works great, hasn't measurably changed since Office 97. Why upgrade? Can it be taken down? What do you think Dave Winer's OPML Editor is? But wait, what chance does OPML Editor or TechCrunch Plus or Writely have against Office? After all, Office already owns the Blogosphere with its built-in RSS editor. You know, Vista, NewsGator, Attensa, Pluck, oh, there isn't one." Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Cowhand: Now this is pretty spooky. ThisisLisa pointed to my feral hog entry and the article she was referring to in the New Yorker is brought to my desk by a co-worker! It's all the magic of OPML  Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Ray Booysen is a "node editor" for the OPML-based iPodder.org directory. This directory is also embedded in many podcast clients. Ray points out that his job is becoming really difficult -- he must manually change and add an ever-shifting list of RSS feeds. Plus, he uploads the resulting OPML file of his part of the directory on his own machine. This means every time I open the "technology" folder in iPodder, Ray is paying for the bandwith. As we go forward with distributed directories, we'll need to do a little thinking about how to make them sustainable. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Oh. Idea. What if we used SSE's bidirectionality to make Ray's job easier? What if he didn't have to update the URLs of RSS feeds when they changed, but that was "pushed" from the feed owner? Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Bob Bichler "This is my first attempt at an OPML blog. I'm not really sure where this will wind up or even how usefull it will really be to me. There just seems to be too many 'big name' people buying into this for it to be totally useless." Heh! Permanent link to this item in the archive.

FlipTheDolphin on BlogBridge: "Why the hell should you want a slow software then? Because it can handle stuff no other competitor can." His big fave: synchronization of OPML lists. Permanent link to this item in the archive.
