I've screwed up, people. Some of you may be using services hosted on my server. I'm very sorry, but I've just accidentally deleted some of these - things like a handful of my websites and the qPodder and Craigslist OPML handlers. I was trying to tweak my setup to make everything work better, and my FTP client went apeshit and started randomly deleting stuff. I'm currently trying to download a comprehensive backup from my web host, which I'll sort through in the morning and put together all the stuff that's broken. There are other scripts which are okay, but because I've lost my .htaccess files, won't work at their friendly addresses. 
Margaret Atwood is really being a bit silly. Next time you're in London, honey, pop on over, and I'll explain to your face exactly why atheism is not a religion and theism isn't a religion either, and explain to her exactly what the difference is between negative and positive atheism. mathew's Introduction seems clear enough though.

Why People Quit 
Logoworks has a post about why people quit their jobs. The last time I saw someone quit, it was because they were being dealt with like they were a child, despite being the backbone of the organisation. There were other issues too.
I went apeshit for about a week. I wanted blood. I eventually found an e-mail address and sent a message. They told me that they were just fine without the job and that I shouldn't bother getting angry. I hope they got a better job without all the bullshit that this particular organisation gave them.
Alan Johnson: Therapy for the unliterary masses!
Only a phillistine could deny that reading literature has intrinsic value. It makes you think, and turns you in to an agent herméneutique, a mariner in the world of thought and abstract ideals. That is it's chief virtue - it elevates the mind to a point where it can see further than ever imaginable.
I'm sure that government ministers must believe this when they aren't sitting at their desks, but it doesn't always look like that.

To be fair to Mr. Johnson, this was not his only statement on the matter - he also stated that reading should help children "fire their imagination, inform their love of language and extend their knowledge". It may also serve a role in informing one's use of language and enflaming one's love of language, but such quibbles over usage are for the bookish, not for those in Westminster.
Still, perhaps this little ditty from the Department of Education might suggest that they seek to try and put a little bit of aesthetic enthusiasm in to English teaching. If this is true, then it is certainly a nice break from the previous education ministers whose attitudes towards anything approximating intellectualism was that it's "a bit dodgy", followed by all the New Labour bingo words like "out-of-touch" and "elitist".
The current attitude towards literature seems to be a little bit like trying to use a slingshot to administer aspirin (get this crystal, dear readers, and you can proceed to the Future Zone). Even if literature did not have any positive health benefits, it would still be worth reading.
