My new blog is here

James Hammerton has a post on the surreal ridiculousness of the new government "junk food" advertising ban. How often do you see adverts for olive oil aimed at children? Might this have passed due to emotionalism - the need to do something, even though it'll be totally ineffective. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Lisa Williams has launched Placeblogger. It's brimming with OPML. I'm thinking about doing a Placeblogger/RDF mashup. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Development diary: OPMLing the night away. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

My OPML-server-on-PHP stuff all seems to be going swimmingly. The transform seems to be working pretty well, although I'm bumping up to a few interesting errors that stem from how the OPML Editor handles non-ASCII text (accented characters like ø being one example - it doesn't do any processing with it). I'm now figuring out how to work around that at the rendering level.

I have a funny feeling that we're going to get in to a deep mess with a big nasty function called cleanThisCrapUp() which will just work through all the things which shouldn't be like they are and fix them. It's called iterative development and optimising for sanity.

I'm also trying to fix a few little rendering issues and turn out very clean code that is valid XHTML. If you are producing web applications, you have an obligation to turn out the best markup you possibly can. That's one of the design goals in this case.
