One is for a client who needs some research done - I'm blogging it in a private blog instead of trying to write up some megadocument. A second is a way to filter off the Ann Arbor specific things I see and hear and do into their own space, so that there's some hope that I can re-enter the set of people who link to each other through their Ann Arbor local blogs. Focused blogs seem to have a lot better uptake than unfocused ones. My Superpatron setup has almost double the readers of Vacuum, mostly because Vacuum is a mishmosh that's hard to subscribe to unless you already know me. (whereas superpatron is immediately easy to describe to any librarian or library patron in the world.) I'm not even going to pretend that this blog is for publishing - it's for taking notes. Work continues on the escape from Google Mail. I managed to keep up with incoming mail today even with spotty net access, since the bulk of my read-reply-file activity was done from out of Apple Mail. The two make a pretty nice combo - I don't feel like I have to file everything (since Google will remember it), but when it does come time to squirrel something away it's easier. And certainly reading the messages is way way faster, without the dozens of seconds wait to get to the next message. I just have this feeling that the product team for Google Mail is optimizing for some environment other than mine. In a world of super bandwidth Google Mail is actually pretty nice. My local coffee shop world, however, features less than perfect conditions, and because of that I'm generally better off working on my local system as much as possible. I guess if you never leave the Googleplex your perspective changes. |
