Vacuum

If you don't write down what you are planning to do, it doesn't get done Permanent link to this item in the archive.

On the other hand, if you write down too many things to do, they might not get done either for thrashing around which is most important at the instant.

It's spring break here, so everything in town is kind of quiet and people are away. Nonetheless we had our weekly Thursday bi bim bop lunch at Eastern Accents. Joe Cothrel and I talked about Mashup Camp, civic networking in Cleveland, and a variety of other things.

We noted in passing the general lack of "relationship management" software aimed at the individual, not the corporate sales person. There's lots of Salesforce-like code that looks to track when you last called someone to sell them life insurance. It's much more rare to see address book applications that do simple things aimed at giving a human touch, like making sure you have a way to ping people whose paths you would not otherwise cross every year or two when an opportunity arises. Joe related the story of how good it was that Outlook fumbled a name auto-complete and he sent mail to the wrong Rob which led to a good discussion albeit unplanned.

Paul Miller from Talis led a discussion of Library 2.0 issues, which will be edited and posted to Talking with Talis. It was a good freerange discussion on libraries and library issues, with a fair bit on the issue of standards in libraries.

Librarians and especially library systems vendors have created and implemented a number of standard data interfaces for exchange. These have tended to be huge, baroque, and overwhelmingly complex formats, impossible to implement unless you are deeply embedded in the vendor world. To a greater or lesser extent this is the reason that library systems are so clumsy - it's hard to do rapid innovation at the user edge when you have a core that's hard to work with.

I write more about library issues on my blog Superpatron.

On tap for today - note to self. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

If I write this down where it's visible, it's more likely to get done.
