Trying this out in OPML. On the OPML weblog you can't see past the second indentation. I could have used the instant outliner for this also but wanted to try it here :). You can view the full version at the K9Cast OPML shownotes page.

Thanks Dave.. Again! Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Woot, Dave is digging my contribution of the bloglines blogroll import. Maybe you guys want to check out the K9Cast podcast about dogs that I produce (here's a 45 second promo). Though Dave, sir, you did mispell my name: it's ELLY not Ely :). It's no problem of course and if I'm not mistaken scripting.com is "officially" under the "type it and post it, damn the spelling errors and the torpedos" mantra. I know he linked to the actual mantra at some point and it made me laugh and try not so hard to spell check everything. Even still, I hope everyone finds the blogroll import howto helpful!

Installing the OPML Editor on multiple computers(!) Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Just a note, when installing the OPML editor on a second computer, make sure you COPY OVER YOUR C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\My Documents\OPML\www\blog files onto your second computer. I assumed the files would sync when I started up the second installation but I assumed wrong :) This also means that you better keep a backup of that directory too, because if you lose your copy of the OPML editor then, as far as I can tell, there is no way to continue with your OPML weblog without wiping it. Of course, Dave will button this up as time goes on :) Fortunately in this case I had remote access to the first computer I installed the editor on and I was able to restore my OPML blog back to normal. Wouldn't want you guys to miss that Bloglines Blogroll Import Howto now would we?

Also, don't forget to escape backslashes by adding an extra \ when typing into the editor :)

Thanks Dave! Permanent link to this item in the archive.

We've been linked! Coolness- thanks for the report on Adam using it, sir. Looking forward to using it on the new episode we should be publishing today. And yes that header graphic IS a bit over the top, did you notice it's the same one he uses in the iTunes music store!? Someone needs to make an iPod mod so Adam can actually show up in real life looking like that at some point. This mod is as close as I've seen it.. but that was for a shuffle.

Bloglines Blogroll Import Howto Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Hey everybody :) First off just one small correction:

The name is Walter ELLY not Ely :)

Ok going to try this in outline format. Might be useful to anyone who wants to import their bloglines blogroll into their OPML blog as I have done.

First you'll need to start a blogroll listing in the OPML editor. Choose Community --> Your OPML Weblog --> Open Blogroll. Just type something simple in there to get the file started, we'll edit it by hand later. Save the file and close the blogroll edit window in the OPML editor.

Second you'll need to export your bloglines blogroll listing into OPML format. There are two ways to do this: If you have a publig page setup, under your public bloglines page, like mine, right click on Export Subscriptions and save the target onto your hard drive. The other way is to go to your my feeds page on bloglines, choose "Edit" and then at the bottom of the page you'll see an Export Subscriptions link, do the same there.

Then open that file that you just downloaded in a text editor and leave it open for now.

Now you'll need to open the OPML editors' blogroll file. Go to Community --> Your OPML Weblog --> Open Blog Folder. Then under the decorations folder you'll find a file named blogroll.opml. Open this file in WORDPAD because notepad won't format the mac or unix-style cr/lf's.

Now switch to the bloglines export file and copy all of the text underneath the outline tag with the title of Subscriptions.

Switch back to the blogroll.opml file and paste what you just copied on a line under the opening body tag and above the closing /body tag.

Now use wordpad's find and replace function to find and replace the following text: Replace all instances of title= with text= ... replace all instances of type="rss with type="link ... and then replace all instances of htmlUrl with url ... Finally, save the file.

Now try opening your newly modified blogroll in the OPML editor: Choose Community --> Your OPML Weblog --> Open Blogroll. Does everything like allright? Great! Congrats! Save the file and update your blog with a post and it should refresh the blogroll on your OPML blog with your bloglines listing!! If not then contact me through the K9Cast link below and we'll see what we can figure out.

You got it now? Cool! I bet there's an easier way to do it though. I tried using the OPML Conversions-->Convert Bloglines file but it seemed to only get the names of the blogs, but not the links to them.

Just wanted to say that hitting SHIFT+BACKSPACE in the editor is no fun at all. No. Fun. At All. Apparently it's something I do often for whatever reason. Go figure. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Still don't have the whole hang of this yet, but it's certainly fun! Good job Dave! Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Bloglines blogroll import by hand Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Ahh! Now that I've figured out how to make new posts appear ahead of older posts I'd like to comment that importing Bloglines subscription OPML files for your blogroll simply involves editing your OPML blog's blogroll file, copying/pasting in the OPML from bloglines and then mass finding/replacing a few bits of code to make the code work. As you can see, it was worth it.

Now, to make it auto update I'm sure I could have just used their blogroll html codelet, but there's probably a way to extract the OPML automatically into this list on this blog here.

Hmm. I wonder if I can use this to build OPML shownotes for K9Cast. UPDATE: The man himself says yes you canPermanent link to this item in the archive.
